Toyota lost $4 billion in the fiscal year ended March 31, and expects to lose another $5.8 billion this year after rushing to build factories that are underutilized in a severe industry downturn.
Watanabe said there were signs of recovery in some regions, but the outlook for the U.S. market was unclear.
Sales of the Camry, the company's best-selling model in the U.S., have dropped 37 percent through May and the Corolla has slipped 32 percent. Demand for the gasoline-electric Prius hybrid has plummeted 46 percent.
