reytsmanNUMMI workers have overwhelmingly approved a shutdown agreement that gives an average severance package of $54,000 to union members and makes the Fremont auto factory's closure within weeks a certainty.

Toyota said earlier this month it would offer $250 million to pay bonuses to hourly and salaried workers at the plant, which makes the Toyota Corolla sedan and Toyota Tacoma pickup.
However, the company and union need to resolve a $131 million shortfall in the company’s hourly pension.

Toyota, like GM, was faced with overproduction in the US market, and because GM had pulled out of NUMMI, the plant was an obvious candidate for closure. So really, these protesters would have some sinister version of GM’s logo on their sign if they were really interested in fairly assigning blame for the NUMMI shutdown. However, their UAW pension fund owns 17.5 percent of GM, so simply blaming Toyota is a lot more convenient.

Date: 2010-03-23 12:51 pm (UTC)А я и забыл, что вне индустрии не все знают, что это был _ЕДИНСТВЕННЫЙ_ завод Тойоты где было UAW, и то только потому что СП с GM. :)
Кстати это одна из причин почему у Тойоты нет заводов в Мичигане....
И как я подозреваю одна из причин почему они предпочитают заводы в США, так как в Канаде и Мексике заводов без CAW их мексиканских эквивалентов вообще не бывает.
